Most Header Goals in Football History

Written by James Whitfield, UEFA B License

The players who scored the most headed goals — ranked, with career heading statistics, their defining headed goals, and the eras that produced the most headers.

Headed goals account for roughly 15–20% of goals at the top level, but a handful of players have scored them at a rate nobody else comes close to. Totals for pre-data-era players are approximate, because goal type was not consistently recorded.

The ranked list

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo — 145+. The most prolific headed scorer of the modern era across Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al-Nassr and Portugal. Benchmark goal: the 2013 leap against Sweden, contact at ~9 ft 7 in (2.93m).
  2. Sergio Ramos — 100+. The highest-scoring headed defender in the modern game. Benchmark goal: the 93rd-minute equaliser in the 2014 Champions League final.
  3. Peter Crouch — 53 (Premier League). Holds the Premier League record for headed goals. Proof that height only matters when paired with timing and body position.
  4. Alan Shearer — 46 (Premier League). Second on the Premier League headed-goal list despite being a complete all-round striker — power and near-post timing.
  5. Miroslav Klose — World Cup record haul. His 2002 World Cup was built almost entirely on headers — the purest back-post runner international football has produced.
  6. Duncan Ferguson — Dozens in the top flight. The most feared aerial centre-forward of his era in English football; power and frequency over spectacle.
  7. Tim Cahill — Most by an Australian. At 5 ft 10 in (1.78m), the best headed-goal output per centimetre of height in the modern game.

Where the most headers are scored

The Premier League has historically produced high headed-goal volumes because of its crossing culture and set-piece emphasis. World Cups also produce outsized headed-goal shares: tight knockout matches are often decided by corners and free kicks, which is why so many famous World Cup goals — Zidane in 1998, Klose in 2002 — were headers.

In recent seasons, the rise of set-piece coaching has pushed headed goals from dead balls back up, even as open-play crossing has declined.

What the top scorers have in common

None of them simply out-jumped defenders. Each one won the ball before the jump — through early flight reading, timed runs and body position. That is the trainable part. Learn it in how to score a header, and compare these scorers with the best headers in football history.
