The Greatest Header Goals in Football History

Not every great header is a headed goal. And not every famous headed goal was struck by the best header in the world. These are the moments where heading technique, stakes, and execution converged into something definitive.

1. Robin van Persie — Netherlands vs Spain, 2014 World Cup

The gold standard of diving-header technique in international football. A cross-field ball played over his shoulder from deep inside the Dutch half — van Persie tracks it, times a full horizontal dive, and finishes into the far corner with Casillas stranded. The distance from which he committed to the dive, the accuracy of his flight reading, and the technical execution make it the most replayed headed goal of the past 20 years.

2. Zinedine Zidane — France vs Brazil, 1998 World Cup Final

Two headed goals from corners inside the first 45 minutes of a World Cup final, from a player nobody had ever identified as an aerial threat. Both from near-post corner runs — both won by movement rather than height. The most consequential headers ever struck, in terms of what they decided.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo — Portugal vs Sweden, 2013 World Cup Qualifier

Measured at approximately 9 ft 7 in (2.93m) above the ground. Contact at the peak of a standing jump of roughly 2 ft 7 in (78cm), struck downward into the net. From a crossing position. In a playoff with World Cup qualification at stake. The combination of physics, timing, and occasion places it on any short list of the greatest headed goals ever scored.

4. Miroslav Klose — Germany vs Saudi Arabia, 2002 World Cup

The purest example of back-post run timing in World Cup history. Klose scored twice in the same game with late runs to the back post from outside the penalty area — both times arriving exactly at the ball's peak flight, both times heading down into the goal. The 2002 tournament gave him four headed goals in total, a record for a single World Cup.

5. Duncan Ferguson — Everton, Premier League era

Ferguson scored so many headed goals in the English top flight that no single one defines his career the way the above players' moments do. But his heading record in competitive football — for power, frequency, and difficulty of contact — places him on any technical shortlist. The most reliable headed goalscorer in English domestic football of his era.

6. Peter Crouch — England vs Sweden, 2006 World Cup

A bicycle kick header at full stretch from a corner. Crouch's headed goal from open play for England at the 2006 World Cup against Sweden demonstrated that his aerial game was not just target-man flick-ons — he could finish from positions that required genuine technical improvisation.

7. Tim Cahill — Australia, various

Cahill at 5 ft 10 in (1.78m) scoring headed goals against defenders 6 in (15cm) taller. The 2014 World Cup header against the Netherlands in the 74th minute — one of Australia's finest in a losing performance — is the most celebrated. His career output per centimetre of height is statistically extraordinary.
